Working with the credit card companies to help your finances

Tuesday May 27, 2008

Credit card companies can help you to improve your financial situation if you use credit cards in the right manner. Don't just use your credit card as a line of credit, as this is the easiest way to get yourself into massive credit card debt. Instead, use your credit card only as an alternative means of payment and choose to use a credit card with a reward program.

Credit card companies like Visa make their money from transactions, while the credit card issuers make money from interest and fee payments. Both benefit from you spending with your credit card more often, as credit card companies get paid for those extra transactions and the credit card issuers know you are more likely to leave payment beyond the interest free period if you must repay more. In order for you to benefit the most, you will need to make money for the credit card companies while making as little for the issuers as possible.

Most reward program credit cards require a vast amount of spending to be worthwhile. This means you will need to use your reward program credit card at every opportunity, but never use it to spend beyond your means. Essentially, you must consider the credit as a temporary replacement for the money you have and then always pay the entire balance off within the interest free period. As reward program structures can change with little notice, you should have specific goals for using the reward points you earn and use the points at the earliest opportunity. Remember that you are trying to beat how much you pay in annual fees with the value of what you earn on the reward program.

While it is definitely possible to profit from credit card usage if you spend and repay correctly, it may not be worthwhile if you don't like what is on offer. As you will be avoiding interest, you will want to choose a reward program credit card based on what the reward program features compared to the amount of spending you need to do to get what you want. Whatever you do, do not fall into the trap of spending more in order to earn more reward points, as this will badly damage your budget.
