Visa and MasterCard: When will you feel the difference in credit card companies?

Monday April 21, 2008

Credit card companies Visa and MasterCard seemingly offer the same level of service to their customers, and often customers are given a choice between which they would prefer for a credit card. The credit card will usually offer the same functionality with either, so when does a difference in credit card companies start to affect you?

First of all, travel can be a big time for relying on your credit card, but both Visa and MasterCard are accepted in a mind bogglingly large number of locations and countries worldwide. There may be a store that accepts one or the other, but as both are exceptionally strong companies, many places accept both just to ensure they aren't turning half of their customers away. It is quite unlikely that if you hold a budget credit card that you will ever feel a difference in services provided by the two major credit card companies.

The second concern is if you have a premium credit card such as a gold or platinum card. It's here and in reward programs that a difference between credit card companies will be most keenly felt. Visa and MasterCard have arrangements with different merchants and companies about their reward points. Mostly the types of services and products you can spend your reward points on will not differ, but the providers will and this could be a source of inconvenience for you.

Essentially, if you are going with a budget credit card, the credit card companies will provide you with a similar enough level of service that it shouldn't make a difference. For those who need a premium credit card, however, then analysing what is on offer in the reward programs of each of the credit card companies is a good idea to ensure you can make the most of it.
