Diners Club is a true leader of innovation. Back in the middle of the 20th century, stores and other establishments were trying to attract more customers by offering credit to gain patronage. The group of Ralph Schneider, Casey R. Taylor, and Frank X. McNamara realized that it would be more convenient if customers could have a way of paying for different things with just one credit card. This group of 200 individuals were mostly salesmen, and these people often dined with clients in various restaurants.
Diners Club tied up with over a dozen restaurants in the city of New York to initiate this new system, and eventually, word got around about the latest alternative to store credit. More restaurants took part in this initiative, and the Diners Club clientèle grew strongly and quickly. When the year 1950 drew to a close, the first credit card company gained 20,000 loyal customers, and the Diners Club Credit Card was accepted in more than 1,000 restaurants.
Competition also sprung from the introduction of the diners credit card, but before everything else began, McNamara sold his shares to Joe Williams, and this move made Diners Club an even more unbeatable force. The company expanded its product line with the Travel & Entertainment market, and this credit card product catered to individuals who fly frequently and were more well off than other clients in terms of finances.
But as Diners Club grew, so did its competition. Credit cards like BankAmericard and Interbank MasterCharge, now known as VISA and MasterCard respectively, were introduced to the market by the end of the sixties. But despite these efforts, the diners credit card reached international waters, as it made its way to Europe and to the rest of the world.
The Diners Clubs Credit Card Company began it all, and now the diners card has gained formidable notoriety the world over. It has even managed to successfully take over its competitors, as it merged with credit cards like MasterCard and Carte Blanche. The Diners Club Credit Card Company has also established relations with Amoco Gasoline, the Sun Oil Company, and Citibank.
No one would've thought that using a piece of plastic could really stir up a storm with consumers, but the Diners Club Credit Card is proof that innovation and convenience are ideas that practical individuals can truly appreciate.
